As someone else said the trail head is just north of mile marker 14 but you have to park on other side of road. The trail after this becomes muddy, but firm, for the next mile or so, which was a welcome relief. At roughly the 1/2 mile point, the trail gets steeper and becomes covered with big, loose rocks, the type where you really have to pay attention to where you place each foot, because the rocks like to slip and roll under your weight. Steep hike the whole way, but has a very nice view from the fire tower at top. Very nice switchback walk up to the (presently closed) tower station, with great views through the trees as you go. From here, follow good road down other side of peak. It is very doable when there is no snow. There were patches of icy snow throughout, but never deep. In fact, we hiked the final couple miles in light flurries and within a couple hours of our return to Sacramento via I-80 the highway was closed by heavy snow and accidents in both directions. All uphill and a good workout - took us about 1.5 hours to get to the top. Healthy trees, lovely challenge, it’s been my favorite close-to-Mimbres hike since far. They were very friendly, but not letting people up into the tower right now due to COVID. Couldn't explore trail because road was closed and gated off. The views are absolutely incredible.
